Key West, Florida is the end of the road for the continental US. It is a tourist trap, a mix of sunshine and rum, and a haven for street performers. The town is for people who like to play hard, and also for those who work hard. The island’s history boasts a bohemian lifestyle but also one of the highest numbers of writer residents.
One of the most famous writers, Ernest Hemingway, first visited Key West in 1928, and that visit marks the time the writers migration began. Over time, novelists, poets, and playwrights, aspiring and already famous congregated on the island. Many of the writers lived in houses that still exist today as private homes. Some kept to themselves, not wanting to destroy the seclusion of the island while others socialized with anyone on the island. The stories that surround the town are not immediately evident and it takes a little digging to get the stories about Key West and famous writers who seem to flock to the tiny island.
